Zayn was about to lose everything. The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) withdrew his residence permit after a series of serious offences, including threatening someone with a knife and extortion on the street. Because of these offences, he faced being sent back to a dangerous and uncertain situation in Iran. But Zayn did not give up. With legal assistance, he managed to regain his residence status. This blog tells Zayn’s inspiring story: how he rebuilt his life and secured his future in the Netherlands.
Who is Zayn? From street violence to recovery
Zayn came to the Netherlands at the age of five with his mother. He grew up here, went to school, and seemed to integrate well into society. Unfortunately, later in life Zayn made poor choices, which led to serious criminal offences. His behaviour not only put his residence permit at risk, but also his entire future.
Despite this, Zayn was determined to leave his mistakes behind. He took full responsibility for his actions and actively started working on his recovery. Through hard work and perseverance, he managed to break away from his past. This was the first step in his fight for a second chance in the Netherlands.
The withdrawal of Zayn’s residence permit: a hopeless situation?
The IND concluded that Zayn posed a danger to society, given the seriousness of his offences. His residence permit was withdrawn, and he was on the verge of having to leave the Netherlands. This seemed like the end of Zayn’s future in the Netherlands, despite the fact that he had lived here for many years and had integrated.
But Zayn did not give up. We examined his situation carefully and highlighted the positive changes he had made. We also explained the circumstances that had influenced his behaviour at the time. With this approach, we were able to convince the IND to reverse the withdrawal of his residence permit.
From criminal behaviour to social engagement: Zayn’s powerful transformation
Zayn is fully aware of the seriousness of his offences and takes responsibility for his actions. Although alcohol misuse and mental health issues affected his behaviour in the past, Zayn has made enormous progress since then. He has his addiction under control, actively follows therapy, and is determined never to relapse into old patterns.
In addition, Zayn chose to steer his life in a positive direction. After school, he started a healthcare programme and volunteered at a local football club, where he coached children. Zayn has always worked, through various part-time jobs, and continues to develop himself. This shows not only his commitment to a better future, but also his determination to remain socially engaged.
Family life: Zayn’s future in the Netherlands
Shortly before the withdrawal of his residence permit, Zayn also became a father. This became a turning point in his life. Fatherhood gave him the motivation to build his future in the Netherlands and to offer his son a safe and stable future, something he himself had never known. Keeping his residence permit became essential for Zayn, because he wanted to take his role as a father seriously.
His son was not the only thing that motivated him. Zayn has always had a strong bond with his mother, who supported him through difficult times. When they fled to the Netherlands together, they lived in a small studio, with Zayn sleeping on a fold-out sofa and his mother on the bed. Despite the limited space, their bond was so close that they could not be without each other. His mother now lives nearby, which keeps their relationship strong. Her support remains invaluable to Zayn.
Ties to the Netherlands: a life of integration
Zayn has spent almost his entire life in the Netherlands. He has been educated here, worked here, and built a family here. He has consistently made efforts to integrate into society. His bond with the Netherlands is deep and strong. Zayn feels at home here and wants to contribute to the society he feels so strongly connected to.
No family in Iran to fall back on
By contrast, Zayn no longer has family in Iran. His mother left the country because of a violent and dangerous situation. Zayn’s family history is marked by trauma, political persecution, and insecurity. Zayn’s mother was targeted for years because of her conversion to Christianity and her political activities. Since their flight to the Netherlands, there has been no contact with family in Iran. For Zayn and his mother, there is no network in Iran they can rely on, which makes it impossible to rebuild a life there.
The IND hearing: success!
After submitting our objection, Zayn was invited to a hearing at the IND. During the hearing, we further explained Zayn’s situation. We emphasised the positive behavioural change he had undergone, the statements from experts, and the crucial importance of his family for his motivation to change. We argued that Zayn had become an involved father and a socially responsible citizen, despite his past.
At the end of the hearing, the IND decided to reverse the withdrawal of Zayn’s residence permit. Zayn was given the chance to continue his future in the Netherlands and burst into tears of relief.
Conclusion: legal assistance and the power of change
Zayn’s case is a powerful example of how legal support can contribute to reconsidering an IND decision. It shows that there is more than just criminal offences. The context of Zayn’s behaviour, his positive change, his responsibility as a father, and the strong ties he has built in the Netherlands must all be taken into account in decision-making.
Thanks to legal support, Zayn regained his residence permit and can continue working on his future in the Netherlands.
How things are now: Zayn’s new beginning
This case took place some time ago, and I am happy to share that Zayn is doing extremely well. We are still in contact, and I see how he continues his new life with his family with confidence and motivation. He has even started his own business, a wonderful example of how someone, with the right support, can turn things around and pursue their dreams. I am incredibly proud of his journey and look forward to everything he will achieve next.
