Government-funded legal aid
In the Netherlands, it is possible to make use of government-funded legal aid, also known as pro deo. Pro deo means that you are assigned a lawyer who is (largely) paid by the government. This scheme ensures that legal assistance remains accessible to everyone, even if you have a low income or no savings.

That is why the Netherlands offers the option of government-funded legal aid, also known as pro deo. Pro deo means that you are assigned a lawyer who is (largely) paid by the government. You only pay a personal contribution yourself, which depends on your income. The remaining costs are reimbursed through the Legal Aid Board. This scheme ensures that legal assistance remains accessible to everyone, even if you have a low income or no savings.
When are you eligible?
You may be eligible for government-funded legal aid if:
- Your income and assets fall below a certain threshold.
- You have a legal matter that falls under the system of the Legal Aid Board (such as immigration law).
- Your application is approved by the Legal Aid Board.

Step by step
How does it work?
- We start with a free and non-binding intake (20 minutes), during which I assess whether I can assist you.
- If you are eligible for legal aid, I will apply for it on your behalf with the Legal Aid Board.
- Once the legal aid has been granted, I will start working on your case. You only pay a personal contribution, which depends on your income.
- In some cases, you may also apply for a waiver of the personal contribution (for example through a social community team).
