Do you want to work in the Netherlands and do you not have the nationality of one of the EU Member States? In most cases, you will need a GVVA (Single Permit for Residence and Work). With this residence permit, you are allowed to live and work in the Netherlands. The application procedure can sometimes be complex, but with the right guidance your application will be processed quickly and correctly.

What is the GVVA?

The GVVA is a combined residence and work permit for non-European employees who wish to work in the Netherlands. It is intended for people who want to work in salaried employment but are not citizens of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland.

When do you need a GVVA?

You need a GVVA if you want to work in the Netherlands and you are not a citizen of an EU or EEA country.

What are the conditions for a GVVA?

One of the most important conditions is that the employer must demonstrate that they first tried to find a suitable employee within the European Union. This is known as the ‘priority labour supply’. The vacancy must also have been registered with the UWV for a certain period. In addition, other conditions apply:

  • The salary must be in line with market standards.
  • The employer must provide proper accommodation.
  • Any other conditions as laid down in legislation or a collective labour agreement.

Exceptions

Certain groups are exempt from the strictest conditions. For example, for students the employer does not have to search for candidates within the EU first. In addition, someone who has held a residence permit for five years that allowed them to work in the Netherlands is thereafter fully free to access the labour market. Please note: a common misconception is that having a BSN automatically allows you to work. This is not the case.
