When is a knowledge migrant allowed to work in the Netherlands?

A knowledge migrant may come to the Netherlands to work, but several conditions apply:

Salary requirement:

• For knowledge migrants aged 30 or older, a minimum gross monthly salary of €5,942 applies.
• For knowledge migrants under the age of 30, the minimum gross monthly salary is €4,754.
• In some cases, the reduced salary criterion of €3,122 applies.

Recognised sponsor:

The employer must be a recognised sponsor with the IND. The IND assesses, among other things, whether the company is reliable and whether continuity and solvency can be guaranteed. How this is assessed depends on how long the company has been established.

More options for highly skilled immigrants

For highly skilled immigrants, the Netherlands (and the EU) offers several additional opportunities to work, such as the European Blue Card and the orientation year permit. This provides more flexibility and opportunities for highly educated individuals from non-EU countries.

1. European Blue Card

The European Blue Card is a combined residence and work permit for a highly qualified profession. Key conditions include:

• You have a higher education diploma from a programme lasting at least 3 years that is required for the job you wish to perform, or you have at least 5 years of work experience at the level of a higher education qualification. For ICT managers and ICT professionals, at least 3 years of relevant work experience in the 7 years preceding the application is required.
• You meet the income requirements.
• Your employment contract must be valid for at least 6 months.

The European Blue Card is a good option for highly skilled professionals who want to build their career in the Netherlands and beyond.

2. Residence permit ‘orientation year for highly educated persons’

After completing a study programme, PhD, or research in the Netherlands, you can apply for the residence permit orientation year for highly educated persons. This gives you up to 1 year to find a job in the Netherlands or start your own business. During this year, you do not need a work permit to be employed.

3. Residence permit for researchers (EU Directive 2016/801)

If you work as a researcher at a research institution in the Netherlands, you may qualify for the residence permit for researchers, based on EU Directive 2016/801. This permit allows you to carry out research temporarily in other EU countries and promotes intra-EU mobility.
